nest reconstruction
An Exercise to Reimagining Domesticity
Hong Kong | 2022 | Interactive Installation
What does a home mean to you? For some, it may be a nest of refuge. For others, it may be a feeling of belonging.
We can often retrace our identity by reflecting on the connection to our home. As part of the Young People Summer Takeover Programme, I have collaborated with the M+ Young Collective in re-constructing a space that symbolises a home with objects found in our daily lives.
In two 1:1 imagined theatre sets, participants were invited to reconstruct memories and objects that have shaped them as a person on one of them, and their prospective treasured memories in their future homes. Collectively we have built a bulletin board that interweves everyone’s memories and celebrates the formative role of ‘home’ as a building block to who we are.
One of my favourite moments was when a mother came in and made a door that represented both her past and her future: in the past she would go out, come home, and see that her parents have prepared dinner for her. In the future, she will be on the other side of the door, waiting for her children to come back home from their adventures.
